CS373 Fall 2020: Ishan Phadke

What did you do this past week?

This past week I caught up on some lectures from classes that I had missed. I also worked on my lab for Network Security that was due Friday. Other than that, I’ve been researching topics for my final paper in my history class.

What’s in your way?

Algolia was acting up last week, and we found that it was because we went over our query limit on the free trial. We are going to have to start using someone else's free trial in our group, but there are 6 of us so we have 5 more free trials left worst case. I also have to get used to being back home this week, since studying is very different when you have two brothers screaming all the time.

What will you do next week?

We are going to finish up refactoring our project, especially some portions where the website looks sort of basic. We also want to finish some front end testing and get the extra credit things done as soon as possible. I also want to get started on some new games I bought yesterday.

If you read it, what did you think of What Happens to Us Does Not Happen to Most of You?

I find it horrifying women actually have to endure terrible actions from men in the tech industry. As educated people who have worked hard to get to where they are, men should have the decency to recognize that women in their field have worked just as hard and endured constant abuse at the same time. How can software engineers be trusted with bank accounts, phone data, and cloud recordings if they can’t be decent people? I hope that our generation can change the tech industry for the better.

What was your experience of refactoring? (this question will vary, week to week)

The three stages of refactoring were very interesting, as they focused on getting the correct solution and then worrying about optimizations. I do this in coding interviews and such, but never realized that it would be useful to apply this to development. Now I can see why dealing with optimizing and building have to be separate processes.

What made you happy this week?

I picked up a few video games to play during the break. Valhalla, Cold War, and Ghost of Tsushima are a few of them. In addition, I’m excited to get some time to see my friends from out of state, albeit socially distant.

What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?

A lot of my friends love to jump on the new console bandwagon immediately. Don't do that. You’ll find that most games are cross-console for at least 6–8 months, so eventually, when they all become next-gen only, that’s your chance to buy new or used consoles for much cheaper.
